Philharmonic on the move ... around the corner
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Effective June 1, the South Carolina Philharmonic will have a new home to go with new music director Morihiko Nakahara.
The orchestra is moving just around the corner from its present Gadsden Street location to 721 Lady Street, Suite B. The move will give the SCP room to expand its music library and staff work space as it goes from 1,650 square feet to 2,350. Roe Interiors is the current tenant of the space, which is in the same cluster of businesses as Wild Wing Café, American Apparel, Savoy and Blue.
The SCP’s phone and fax numbers will remain the same and they will continue to sell season subscriptions out of their in-house box office in the new space.
Cyberwoven, sponsors and current neighbors of the SCP, made the move possible when, in need of their own expansion, inquired about the availability of the current SCP office. The parties reached an agreement that allowed Cyberwoven to sponsor the SCP’s move and increase their own space.
Area interior designer Tim McLendon, in charge of design for the new M Vista restaurant also on Lady Street, is donating his time on the SCP’s behalf. Vista neighbor Whit-Ash Furnishings is donating new furniture for the office lobby.
In an ironic twist, the orchestra last moved in 1993, which was the last time it got a new music director. Morihiko Nakahara of Spokane, Wash. was named the fifth music director in the SCP’s 45-year history just weeks ago on April 21.
