Dance into 2009 with the Philharmonic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A New Year’s tradition comes back, in a slightly different form, as the SCP presents “Dancing with the Phil” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Koger Center.

Columbia audiences have long enjoyed the smooth waltzes and graceful ballroom dancing featured in the SCP’s annual Viennese New Year concert. Music Director Morihiko Nakahara brings the concert back after a one-year hiatus as “Dancing with the Phil,” with a few twists to put his own mark on the tradition.

Adding to the customary waltzes, the dancers of the Vista Ballroom Company, led by Harby Gonzalez and Erin Jaffe, infuse the concert with tango and salsa dancing to give the evening the feel of television’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

During the concert, the SCP introduces Columbia to Mary-Therese Heintzkill, the winner of the inaugural Philharmonic Idol competition. Heintzkill, a soprano, is a voice performance student from Michigan taking graduate courses at USC to become an opera singer. She sang Bellini’s Tutto è gioia, tutto éfesta from the opera La Sonnambula.

“Dancing with the Phil” features music by Gershwin; Joseph Strauss, Jr.; Dvorák; Duke Ellington and Astor Piazzolla.

Available online or by phone at 803.251.2222, tickets are $35, $25 and $15. Student and military discounts available. Southern Valet provides valet parking for just $6.
