About the Concert Orchestra

The Concert Orchestra is a string ensemble comprised of intermediate level string players with 2-4 years playing experience. Students perform string orchestra literature in addition to intermediate-level arrangements.

The Concert Orchestra meets from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the USC School of Music.

Audition Requirements

All auditions require scales, solo piece and a set list of excerpts. Please review your instrument requirements listed below. For any questions email susan@scphilharmonic.com.

  • We will no longer require sight-reading for Concert Orchestra auditions.
  • Excerpts may be played at Quarter Note = 100.
  • Violinists auditioning may play the top OR bottom line at E - first beat of F in Anvil's Chorus.

Scale Requirement: One-quarter note per scale degree, quarter note=80

Violin

  • D major two-octaves
  • A melodic two-octaves

Viola and Cello

  • G major two-octaves
  • D melodic minor two-octaves

Double Bass

  • D major two-octaves
  • D melodic one-octave

Solo Requirement: Prepare a solo piece of choice that will showcase your technique, musicality, and overall playing ability.
